10 lessons to write 300% better!

September 23rd, 2008

Ok, it’s just an estimate, but 30% is the minimum of what you’ll get from these articles.

When I decided to start blogging, I knew what’s the area where I have to put the most effort and hard work to improve. And it was writing. Since I’m not a native speaker, I thought I’m far behind everyone else who speaks this language as his mother language.

Then I found a few blogs where people made such grammatical and spelling mistakes that even I’d be kicked out of fourth grade for that :D

But it’s not an excuse for me to not learn English and improve my skills constantly. So I’ve compiled here a list of 10 articles written by various authors from Dailywritingtips.com. This was the first site I came across when I wanted to learn how to write like the pros, and I still consider it the main source of my learning material.

These 10 little lessons are chosen by me. I suggest you to gradually build the techniques and methods they describe into your daily routine, but don’t you dare to stop then! There are plenty of other interesting and important stuff on their site to grasp, more than enough for you to learn.

And since I also neglected this very important part of blogging, I’ll do these lessons with you simulteanously, adding a lesson and using practising it every 3 days, so I can implement all the ideas in a month. You can progress in a rate you feel comfortable with, of course.

Here are the 10 lessons:

  1. Write First, Edit Later
    The basics.
  2. Write Super-Fast
No, it’s not about speed-writing. It’s a complementary post to the previous one.
  3. 8 Proofreading Tips And Techniques
The second step. Proofreading your blog posts after typing them up is an essential part of the writing process. We all do it at some level, but this post shows you how to do it more effectively.
  4. Four Tips For Successful Web Writing
This one is just for us. Follow these rules, and you’ll have better qualty content.
  5. Five Words You Can Cut
I’ll have a hard time with this one, cause I use three of them very often. But I’m ready to make this sacrifice :)
  6. Eliminating Superfluous Phrases
We have been taught by teachers for years how useful and commonly used these sentences are.
    Thanks very much conventional education!
  7. Write To Be Scanned
This is one of the most important lessons. The most successful bloggers all write in this manner.
  8. Why We Need Paragraphs
It’s still related to the 6. You’ll write much clear, perspicuous articles.
  9. The Dummy Subject
Another common mistake you should be aware of.
  10. How To Write Every Day (and why you should
Maybe we should’ve started with this one, but it’ll help you to keep this good habit going.

That’s it, my little collection form Dailywritingtips. Note that these posts were chosen from the Writing Basics section only, but you can find more advanced and more specialized topics on their blog, as you’ll see.
It’s definitely worth a look.

Writing is a skill that’s strongly disregarded by beginner bloggers. Yes, you heard it: beginners! Because all the professional bloggers know that this is one of the most essential skills you have when it comes to blogging. Treat it that way!

    Jani,

George Orwell wrote two great essays about writing that every writer ought to read often. They are: “Politics and the English Language” and “Why I Write.” Both of these essays are available on-line and will help any writer improve their craft.

Hope you and your readers find this helpful.

    Best,

    James

    @Ravi: that’s exactly what I thought first. I’m glad I could help

@James: thanks very much for the great comment. I’ll definitely check them out. One of my friends is an Orwell-maniac, but he forgot to mention this one :D

@Yan, I didn’t even noticed it’s not your first language. Good job!
